Technische
Universität
(Munich Technical
University)
To meet demands for an independent
academic engineering course, a separate Technical University
was set up as part of the Munich University in 1833. In 1868,
King Ludwig II founded an independent Polytechnic School,
that moved into its new buildings and began work in the same
year.
The Technical University, called "Technische
Hochschule München" played an important part in
Bavaria´s development from an agricultural to a modern
industrial state. Many famous scientists and engineers such
as Rudolf Diesel, Heinz Meier-Leibnitz or Friedrich von Thiersch
studied and taught here.
Today, many of the 12 faculties lie outside
Munich, ie in Weihenstephan or in Garching - where the first
German research reactor the controversial "Atomic-Egg"
was recently shut down after almost 43 years operation. A
neutron-reactor, suited to latest scientific demands, is about
to open this year.
Currently, the Technical University
is divided among 15 special research units, administrated
by well-known German research institutes.
It has about 19.000 students and offers 25 diploma courses.
Because of globalisation, in the future there will also be
internationally accepted exams such as Batchelor and Master
degrees.
