Starnberger Lake, also known as the Würmsee, lies roughly 20 km south of Munich and is the second largest lake in Bavaria, after the Chiemsee. Bavarias "bathtub" was already a popular recreational area at the beginning of the 17th Century. The picturesque countryside around the lake is dotted with many old buildings and numerous palaces. The village of Possenhofen with "Possi" palace, -as the Empress Sisi lovingly called it, Ammerland and Berg - with a votive chapel in Berg palace marking the deathplace of Bavarias King Ludwig II.- are just some of the sights worth seeing around Starnberger Lake.

Size/Water quality
57 km², - 21 km long and. 5 km at it's widest point,
20 km of the shores are open to the public
As a circular sewage system was built very early, bathing anywhere on the lake is possible without reservation.

Recreational activities
Numerous sunbathing areas, bathing beaches, hiking paths, Watersports i.e. Sailing and Surfing, Steamship trips lasting between 1 - 3 hrs, dinner and dance boat trips, diving area (deepest point 127m)

by car: A 7 towards Garmisch, i.e. Autobahn exit Starnberg
